There's so much -- but so little -- to talk about as the Mets gear up for the winter meetings on Dec. 8.
Here's some news from the day.
* The Mets offered Oliver Perez salary arbitration. Good. The draft is the way to build a winner these days and now the Mets will be players if (when) Ollie bolts.
* The Pedro Martinez signing was a bust for the Mets, ESPN.com's Bob Klapish says. TRUE. Petey was great in 2005 when the team was in transition, then he broke down when the Mets actually got good. And I don't buy that stuff about Carlos Beltran signing because of Martinez. Carlos landed in Flushing because the Mets offered $119M. And because the Yankees didn't want him.

AN IMPROBABLE ENCORE
As Carlos Beltran prepared to exit the clubhouse at Shea Stadium late yesterday afternoon, he spotted Pedro Martinez. The two embraced and Beltran sunk his head into Martinez's shoulder, tears welling in his eyes.
